Ways to Pay

SEPTA Key is a reloadable, contactless chip card with options to load Passes and/or Travel Wallet funds for seamless travel.

Purchasing and Registering your SEPTA Key Card

Key cards can be purchased from SEPTA Sales Offices, Station Fare Kiosks or from retailers located throughout the service area. The card costs $4.95, but when you register it at septakey.org, the card’s cost is refunded to your card’s Travel Wallet for spending on future travel. Cards must be registered within 30 days of purchase. There is a limit of two rebates per account.

Registering Online:

  1. First create an account by going to septakey.org and clicking on “Register My New Card.”
  2. This takes you to the Sign Up page. Fill in the fields with your information, including your new Key card number, and follow the prompts to complete the process.
  3. Once completed, you will receive an email to Confirm Account Creation. Click the link in the email and it will take you back to septakey.org. Your account is now created and your Key card is registered.
  4. Log into septakey.org to load/reload fares to your Key card, set up an auto-load account, review your trip history or report your Key card as lost or stolen.

You can check the balance on your Travel Wallet or the validity dates of the Passes on your Key card by tapping it on the card reader at any Fare Kiosk.

If you register your Key card, you have additional options:

Key Card Expiration Information

Your SEPTA Key card is valid for up to four years from the date of purchase, as indicated by the last day of the month printed as month/year on the card. During that time, you can load/reload your SEPTA fares to the same card. Weekly and Monthly Passes cannot be added beyond the expiration date printed.

Once the card reaches the end of the month of the expiration date printed on the front, you cannot add any more Passes or Travel Wallet funds, and you will need to purchase a new Key card. If your card is set to expire and it is not already registered, please do so immediately online at septakey.org or by calling the Key Customer Call Center at 855-567-3782. Registering your Key card makes it much easier to transfer any Travel Wallet funds or pass products to another card.

Before you can transfer the Passes or Travel Wallet funds from an expiring Key card, you will need to:

Once you have a new card, you have three options to transfer your fares:

If your card expires and it is unregistered, your only option is to contact the SEPTA Key Customer Call Center at 855-567-3782 to request a credit/refund for any unused daily passes or Travel Wallet Funds.

Lost, Stolen or Defective Key Cards

Report a lost or stolen Registered Key card at septakey.org or by calling the Key Customer Call Center at 855-567-3782. The funds in your Travel Wallet and your current Pass will be temporarily suspended from use until you get a replacement Key card.

If your SEPTA Key card is no longer working and is not visibly damaged, bring it to a SEPTA Sales Office for a free replacement. A free replacement will be provided for cards with no cracks, bends, tears or holes with the $4.95 replacement fee waived.

Multi-rider Fare Information

The SEPTA Key card is designed to be used by just one person. However, you can register it and enable a multi-rider feature that allows up to five riders to use a single Key card.

To pay for more than one person using your Key card, you can enable the multi-rider feature. The multi-rider feature allows up to five riders on one SEPTA Key card, and is available on all SEPTA Networks: Bus, Metro and Regional Rail. You must opt-in to this feature through your SEPTA Key account at septakey.org or by calling the Key Call Center at 855-567-3782.

Alternatively, available now on bus and Metro, you can download the SEPTA App to access Key Tix which allows for up to five riders on one barcode ticket. Key Tix will be available on Regional Rail in Fall 2024.

SEPTA Key Accessibility, Language Access and Cash Access Information

All Fare Kiosks have Braille and raised lettering labels, an audio function that converts the information on the screen to spoken instructions and a jack for audio amplification equipment to support the completion of a transaction.

Both septa.org and septakey.org are ADA accessible; and customers can contact the Key Customer Call Center (855-567-3782) for assistance to register a Key card, load/reload fares, check balances or report a lost or stolen registered card.

Fare Kiosks have a language feature that automatically translates the screen text into Spanish, and both septa.org and septakey.org have tools that can translate the text into more than 100 languages.

Cash is accepted at SEPTA Key Fare Kiosks, SEPTA Sales Offices and most external retailers for the purchase of a Key card or the purchase of a SEPTA fare product.
